NDIS Assistance with Travel and Transport helps eligible participants who are unable to use public transport without significant difficulty due to their disability.
The support is designed to help participants travel to work, study, medical appointments, or community activities to pursue their goals.
No. The NDIS does not cover public transport fares or concessions, as these are the responsibility of state or territory governments.
However, the NDIS may fund travel training or a support worker to assist you on public transport if it’s related to your disability.
You may be eligible if you:
– Cannot use public transport without difficulty due to your disability
– Need to travel regularly for work, study, therapy or community access
– Have limited informal support (e.g. no family who can drive you)
Eligibility and funding level are based on your personal needs and goals discussed during your planning meeting.
• Level 1 – $1,784/year: For participants not working or studying but aiming to improve community access
• Level 2 – $2,676/year: For part-time workers/students or those attending day programs and community activities
• Level 3 – $3,456/year: For full-time workers/students (15+ hours/week) who cannot use public transport
• Higher funding may be available in exceptional circumstances, such as when supports relate to employment participation.
Yes – if you're unable to use public transport due to your disability and this support is included in your plan.
You can use your transport funding to pay for taxis, rideshare, or community transport services (but not for public transport fares).
Self-managed or plan-managed participants can use unregistered providers like Uber or Ola.
Yes. If you have Core Supports under Assistance with Social and Community Participation, a support worker can:
– Drive you to appointments, work, or social outings
– Accompany you on public transport (but you still pay the fare)
Providers can also claim travel time and kilometres, as long as it's agreed in your service booking or agreement.
Yes – if modifications to a private vehicle are necessary due to your disability and meet NDIS funding criteria.
The NDIS may also fund driver assessments and lessons to help you learn how to use your modified car.
The NDIS does not fund modifications to public transport or taxis.
Talk to your Local Area Coordinator (LAC), planner, or Support Coordinator during your planning meeting.
Be clear about:
– Why you can’t use public transport
– How often you need transport
– Where you travel to and why (e.g. work, study, therapy)
Provide evidence such as reports from allied health professionals or a GP.
