What is NDIS Catheter Care?

NDIS Catheter Care is a funded support for participants who require assistance with the management and maintenance of a urinary catheter. This is not a standard personal care task; it is a clinical procedure that requires specific skills to prevent infections and ensure your comfort and health. Under your NDIS plan, this service falls under "Assistance with Daily Life" or "Improved Health and Wellbeing" and can be provided by a qualified nurse or a highly-trained disability support worker. We handle all aspects, from routine cleaning and bag emptying to sterile catheter changes and complication monitoring, all within your own home.

  • Reduced Risk of Infection

Our strict aseptic techniques and sterile procedures significantly lower the risk of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), a common and serious complication, protecting your long-term health.

  • Dignity and Comfort Preserved

We understand the personal nature of this care. Our approach is always respectful and discreet, allowing you to maintain your dignity in the familiar, private environment of your home.

  • Expert Care by Qualified Staff

Your care is delivered by an NDIS-registered nurse or a support worker specifically trained and competent in catheter management, ensuring the highest standard of clinical practice.

  • Proactive Complication Management

We don't just perform tasks; we monitor for early warning signs like blockages, leaks, or skin irritation, taking proactive steps to prevent emergencies and hospitalisations.

  • Empowerment and Independence

ReWe educate you and your family on catheter care basics, helping you understand the process and feel more in control of your health, fostering greater independence.

Yes, if it is a support you need due to your disability. Catheter care is typically funded under the Core Supports - Assistance with Daily Life budget in your NDIS plan. It is considered a "reasonable and necessary" support to help you manage your personal hygiene and maintain your health.

This depends on the complexity of the task. ARegistered or Enrolled Nursemust perform sterile catheter changes. For routine daily care like emptying the drainage bag, cleaning the catheter site, and general hygiene, aqualified Disability Support Workerwho has received specific, competent training in catheter management can provide the support. Beyond Health Services provides both levels of care.

Our support workers undergo rigorous, hands-on training beyond their core qualifications (Certificate III/IV). This includes specific modules on infection control, aseptic techniques, catheter bag management, and recognising signs of complications. They are only signed off to perform these tasks once they are assessed as fully competent by our clinical lead.

Our staff are trained to recognise these issues immediately. We will follow an emergency protocol which includes:

  1. Taking immediate steps to ensure your comfort and safety.
  2. Contacting our on-call clinical nurse for advice.
  3. If necessary, we will assist in contacting your doctor or arranging urgent medical care. We document everything and communicate with your healthcare team.

The NDIS can fund the cost of the catheters and consumables (bags, straps, sterile gloves) under theConsumablesbudget in your Core Supports. We can help you manage these supplies, including advising on what to order and how to store them, but the procurement is typically managed by you or your plan manager

We adhere to strict clinical protocols for every procedure. This includes using single-use sterile equipment, performing comprehensive hand hygiene, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintaining a clean and organised work area. Our staff receive ongoing training and audits to ensure these standards are never compromised.

Absolutely. Our support can extend to community access. A support worker can assist you with managing your catheter bag discreetly while you are out, including emptying it in a public restroom facility using a clean technique, ensuring you can participate in social activities with confidence.

Simply click "Book Your Catheter Care Assessment" or call us directly. We will need a copy of your NDIS plan and details from your GP or urologist regarding the type of catheter and the specific care requirements. This allows us to perform a thorough clinical risk assessment and match you with the most appropriate clinician from the start.
