Yes, the NDIS may fund home modifications if your disability significantly affects your ability to move around safely or complete daily tasks at home. These changes must be considered reasonable and necessary, and directly related to your disability.
The NDIS may fund modifications such as, but not limited to:
- Installing ramps, rails, or stair lifts
- Widening doorways
- Modifying bathrooms or kitchens
- Lowering benches or sinks
- Automatic doors or accessible entryways
The goal is to help you live safely and independently in your home.
Yes. The NDIS requires a home modification assessment by a qualified Occupational Therapist (OT). The OT will evaluate your needs and recommend specific changes based on your disability, home layout, and functional goals.
Once approved, modifications must be carried out by NDIS-registered builders or licensed tradespeople. Your OT or Support Coordinator can help you find suitable providers and ensure the process meets NDIS quality and safety standards.
Yes, but you’ll need written consent from the property owner or landlord before any changes can take place. In some cases, temporary or non-structural modifications may be recommended. Your OT can assist with appropriate documentation.
Possibly. If you’re building or purchasing a new home, the NDIS may contribute to the cost of disability-specific features, but it does not fund general construction or upgrades. Early discussions with your NDIS planner and OT are essential to determine what's reasonable.
The process can take several weeks to months. It involves an OT assessment, quotes from builders, and NDIA approval. Your Support Coordinator can assist with managing timelines and keeping the process on track.
Your Occupational Therapist, Support Coordinator, or Plan Manager can help organise assessments, quotes, and liaise with registered providers.
At Beyond Health Services, we support participants through the entire home modification process — from assessment and reports to liaising with builders and overseeing the project.
