Yes, the NDIS funds interpreting and translation services if they are required for you to access and use your NDIS supports. This can include spoken language interpreters, Auslan interpreters, or written translation of documents, especially during planning meetings, therapy sessions, and other funded supports.

You may be eligible if you have difficulty understanding or communicating in English due to a language background or hearing impairment, and this impacts your ability to engage with NDIS-funded supports. Eligibility is assessed during planning, and supports must be considered reasonable and necessary.

Yes, interpreting services must be arranged through NDIS-registered interpreting and translation providers, typically coordinated by the National Interpreting and Communication Services (NICSS) or through agencies listed by the NDIA. Your Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator can help organise this.

Yes, if you use Auslan (Australian Sign Language) to communicate, the NDIS can fund Auslan interpreters for your planning meetings, therapy sessions, education, employment support, and other NDIS-funded activities. Auslan training for your family may also be included in some cases.

Yes, the NDIS may fund the translation of key written documents, such as therapy reports, service agreements, and care plans, into your preferred language if it's essential to help you understand your supports and make informed decisions.

Yes, it’s best to discuss your need for interpreters or translation at your planning meeting or plan review. The NDIA will consider whether the support is reasonable and necessary and ensure the right funding is included under the "Capacity Building – Support Coordination" or "Improved Daily Living" budgets.

If your plan includes interpreting services, your Support Coordinator, Local Area Coordinator (LAC), or service provider can help book a qualified interpreter through approved providers such as NICSS or local interpreting agencies registered with the NDIS.

If you require an interpreter but this support wasn’t included in your current plan, you can contact the NDIS or your Local Area Coordinator to discuss your needs. You may be able to request a plan reassessment or access interpreting support through government-funded services like TIS (Translating and Interpreting Service) for some situations.
