What is an NDIS Respiratory and Ventilation Assessment

An NDIS Respiratory and Ventilation Assessment is a specialised evaluation conducted by our experienced respiratory clinicians to thoroughly assess your lung function and breathing mechanics. This assessment is critical for NDIS participants with conditions affecting their respiratory system, such as spinal cord injuries, neuromuscular disorders, or chronic lung diseases. It goes beyond basic checks to determine your need for, and the correct settings of, ventilation support (like BiPAP/CPAP), oxygen therapy, and airway clearance techniques. The goal is to ensure optimal respiratory health, prevent complications, and significantly improve your sleep, energy levels, and overall participation in daily life.

Our Assessment Process

Step 1: Initial Enquiry & Information Gathering

We discuss your needs, medical history, current challenges, and NDIS goals to tailor the assessment specifically to you.

Step 2: Comprehensive Clinical Assessment

Our specialist clinician conducts the assessment, which may include non-invasive tests like pulse oximetry, capnography, lung function checks, and a review of your current equipment.

Step 3: Detailed Report & Recommendations

You receive a comprehensive report with clear findings and evidence-based recommendations for equipment, therapy, and support needs.

Step 4: Implementation of the Plan

We support you and your team in implementing the recommendations, which may include liaising with equipment providers and training your support workers

Step 5: Ongoing Monitoring & Review

We schedule follow-ups to ensure the plan is effective, make adjustments as needed, and provide continuous support for your respiratory health.

Who needs an NDIS Respiratory and Ventilation Assessment?

This assessment is essential for NDIS participants whose disability impacts their breathing. This includes individuals with spinal cord injuries (especially high-level), muscular dystrophy, motor neurone disease (MND), cerebral palsy with respiratory involvement, or those who require or currently use ventilation support (like NIV or tracheostomy ventilation).

What is the difference between a respiratory assessment and a standard vital signs check?

A standard vital signs check is a general snapshot of health, including breathing rate. Our specialised respiratory assessment is an in-depth evaluation of how you breathe, your lung capacity, gas exchange (oxygen and carbon dioxide levels), and the effectiveness of your respiratory muscles. It is designed to diagnose complex breathing issues and manage ventilation equipment.

Can this assessment help me get funding for a CPAP or BiPAP machine through the NDIS?

Absolutely. A comprehensive report from our assessment provides the necessary evidence to demonstrate that a ventilator (like a BiPAP) or a sleep apnoea machine (CPAP) is a reasonable and necessary support due to your disability. This report is crucial for your NDIS plan review to secure funding for the device and its ongoing consumables.

Do you assess people who already have respiratory equipment?

Yes, we specialise in both initial assessments and ongoing reviews. If you already have equipment, we can assess its effectiveness, ensure the settings are optimised for your current needs, and provide training for you and your support team on its correct use and maintenance.

How is this service funded under the NDIS?

This assessment is typically funded under the Capacity Building - Improved Health and Wellbeing category of your NDIS plan. It is considered a reasonable and necessary support when your disability directly affects your respiratory health. Our team can assist you in understanding your funding and managing the booking process.

What qualifications do your assessors have?

Our assessments are conducted by highly qualified Respiratory Scientists, Clinical Nurse Consultants specialising in ventilation, or other allied health professionals with specific expertise in complex respiratory and disability care. All our staff are NDIS-approved and experienced in working with participants.

Where does the assessment take place?

We offer flexible options to suit your needs. The assessment can be conducted in your own home, in a group home, or at one of our fully equipped clinics. We bring the necessary portable technology to you to ensure you are in a comfortable and familiar environment.

What happens if the assessment identifies a serious problem?

Your safety is our priority. If our assessment identifies an urgent concern, we will immediately contact your GP or specialist to ensure you receive prompt medical attention. Our report will clearly outline any critical findings and provide a clear pathway for escalation and management.

What Families Have to Say

"My support worker, Sarah, has been an absolute lifesaver. She helps with my daily routine, from meal prep to getting to appointments on time, and even takes me on short walks to the park. Sarah is patient and really listens to what I need. I’m so grateful for the support she provides – I feel more confident knowing she’s there."
Emily T, Brunswick, Melbourne
"We hired a gardener from Beyond Health Services, and Jason has completely transformed our backyard. Jason M, St Albans, Melbourne
"The cleaning service from Beyond continues to impress us. Every corner of our home gets attention – they even scrubbed out stains from the carpets that we thought would never come out. I always look forward to coming home to a fresh, spotless house after their visit. Their reliability is what sets them apart."
Sophia R, Sunshine West, Melbourne
"I’m so grateful for Liam, the driver who takes my father to his medical appointments. Liam is always on time, helps my dad in and out of the car, and even waits with him at the doctor’s office. It’s reassuring to know my dad is in such capable hands when I can’t be there myself."
Adam G, Windsor, Melbourne
"These guys sent over a fantastic speech therapist to help my son with his communication challenges. Kate was incredibly patient, using fun and interactive techniques to get him to open up. In just a few weeks, we’ve seen a noticeable improvement in his speech, and he’s more confident in expressing himself. We’re so thankful for Kate’s expertise and warmth."
