Quick answer

Support coordinators are not being switched off immediately. The Government announced a new commissioned NDIS support coordination and connection service to start on 1 July 2028. It says the new service will replace the current way participants receive support coordination. The design is not final: consultation closed on 2 October 2026, and the Government has said feedback will help shape advice about the future service. The announcement does not set out individual transition instructions, so keep following your current plan and any written NDIA directions.

Are NDIS support coordinators being phased out?

The current service model is expected to be replaced, but the Government’s announcement describes a new support coordination and connection service rather than ending coordination support altogether. It says support coordinators play a valuable role helping participants understand, access and coordinate supports. The reform is intended to improve service quality, consistency, safeguarding and clarity between provider roles.

The proposed model is still being designed. The Government invited participants, families, carers, advocates, providers and workers to comment on what the service should do, how it should be delivered and what quality and safeguarding arrangements are needed. Do not treat early design ideas or rumours as the final rules.

What has not been announced yet? The public announcement does not provide the final service design, commissioning arrangements, provider selection rules or individual transition steps. Confirm these details in later NDIA and Department of Health, Disability and Ageing updates.

When is the new support coordination service planned to start?

Date Published information What participants should understand
7 September 2026 The Government announced its plan for a new commissioned NDIS support coordination and connection service. This was an announcement and consultation on early design, not the final operating rules.
2 October 2026 The consultation period closed. Feedback is intended to inform advice to Government about the final design.
1 July 2028 The new commissioned service is scheduled to begin. More implementation and participant transition information is needed before people can know exactly how their current arrangements will change.

Because the start date is in the future, check the official information again before making decisions about a support coordinator, plan funding or service agreement. If you receive a letter about your own plan, follow the instructions in that letter and ask your my NDIS contact to explain anything unclear.

What does an NDIS support coordinator do now?

A support coordinator can help you understand and use the supports in your plan, choose providers, connect with community and mainstream services, set up service agreements and build confidence managing supports. The work should be guided by your goals, preferences and the funding in your plan.

The NDIA currently describes three levels of support coordination:

  • Level 1: Support connection helps you understand your plan and connect with community and mainstream supports.
  • Level 2: Support coordination helps build skills and confidence to direct your life, connect services and work toward goals.
  • Level 3: Specialist support coordination is for people with more complex situations who need help maintaining consistent services through challenges in their support environment.

The right support depends on the participant’s goals, situation and available plan funding. A support coordinator should help you make informed choices; they do not approve your NDIS plan or decide which supports the NDIA funds.

How is support coordination funded?

Support coordination must be included in your plan for you to claim it as an NDIS-funded support. Check your plan to see whether support coordination or recovery coaching is funded, how the budget is managed and what amount is available. A coordinator can help explain supports, but does not control your budget or guarantee that the NDIA will approve a requested change.

Support coordination is different from plan management. A plan manager handles financial administration such as processing invoices and tracking spending. A support coordinator helps you put supports in place and connect services. Some people have both types of support, one, or neither.

If your circumstances change or your plan no longer meets your support needs, ask your my NDIS contact what options are available under the current plan-change rules. Do not assume the new service announcement automatically changes your current budget.

What should participants do now?

  • Continue using your current plan and support arrangements unless the NDIA gives you different instructions.
  • Keep a copy of your plan, service agreement, recent reports and contact details for your coordinator.
  • Discuss your goals and any concerns about coordination with your my NDIS contact or trusted advocate.
  • Ask your coordinator how they will keep you informed about official updates and support any future handover.
  • Check Department and NDIA announcements for confirmed transition instructions before changing providers.

If you want to change coordinators under current arrangements, ask how to end the existing service agreement and booking and how your important records and support handover will be managed. You can ask a trusted person or advocate to help you understand choices and communications.

Common questions about the proposed changes

Will support coordination funding end in 2028?

The Government’s announcement says the new commissioned service is planned to replace the current way support coordination is delivered. It does not say that coordination support will disappear. Final details about service delivery and participant transitions are still being developed.

Do I need to change my support coordinator now?

The announcement does not ask participants to change their current coordinator now. Follow your current plan and any written NDIA directions. Ask your my NDIS contact if you receive information that affects your own arrangements.

Will I still choose who supports me?

The final model is not yet published, so the full choice and provider arrangements are not confirmed. The Government has said it is seeking feedback on the service design, delivery and safeguarding. Check later official updates for the final rules.

Is support coordination the same as plan management?

No. Support coordination helps you understand and connect supports. Plan management handles financial administration and claims. The Government’s panel reform is a separate change to plan management.
