NDIS gardening or yard-maintenance help is a distinct household task, with a different support code and price from indoor cleaning.

Short answer

The item is officially named 'House or Yard Maintenance'. For eligible disability-related circumstances it may cover ordinary yard upkeep such as mowing accessible lawns, removing weeds and maintaining basic safe access around the home. It is not a separate price for every kind of landscaping project. The current national maximum is $59.01/hour using 01_019_0120_1_1 when the support is eligible and the correct item is selected.

What is gardening and yard maintenance under the NDIS?

The item is officially named 'House or Yard Maintenance'. For eligible disability-related circumstances it may cover ordinary yard upkeep such as mowing accessible lawns, removing weeds and maintaining basic safe access around the home. It is not a separate price for every kind of landscaping project.

NDIS funding should be used for supports linked to the participant's disability-related functional needs and their plan—not simply because a provider has a particular job title. If the same worker provides different types of assistance during one booking, consider the actual tasks and appropriate codes rather than using one higher rate for everything.

Gardening and Yard Maintenance item code and 2026–27 price limits

The schedule lists 01_019_0120_1_1 at the following maximum hourly amounts:

National · MM1–5$59.01per eligible hour
Remote · MM6$82.61per eligible hour
Very remote · MM7$88.52per eligible hour

Some isolated towns receive modified geographic classification. The appropriate rate is determined by the place where support takes place. These are maximum amounts for NDIA-managed and plan-managed supports; a lower agreed rate is possible.

When can it be used, and when can’t it?

Suitable funded situations

For example, a participant's disability prevents safe lifting, bending or operating equipment needed for routine garden upkeep, and there is an eligible NDIS-funded need for assistance. Agree the specific maintenance jobs, time required and safe access arrangements.

Situations this item does not automatically cover

Major landscaping, construction, decorative design, replacing an entire garden, unrelated general property improvements or routine landlord responsibilities are not automatically NDIS supports. Indoor vacuuming and bathroom cleaning fall under the different cleaning item 01_020_0120_1_1.

Who is allowed to provide this service?

The schedule does not impose a named clinical registration for yard maintenance. A suitable worker should be competent in safe use of mowers, trimmers and other equipment, manage manual-handling risks, and comply with any relevant provider and screening obligations.

Provider registration and individual qualifications are separate questions. The schedule does not prescribe one named allied-health credential for this labour item. Workers must nevertheless be suitable, competent and appropriately screened or supervised where required, and operate safely within the actual task.

Practical example and invoice calculation

A gardener undertakes two hours of eligible basic yard maintenance at the national maximum. The arithmetic charge is $118.02 (2 × $59.01). Keep the work details and actual time in the service record; equipment hire or waste removal must not be added without an appropriate permitted basis.

The claim should state the service date, tasks, exact time spent, agreed hourly rate, support item and any extra cost separately where allowed. The hour unit means actual minutes can be charged proportionally; the rate does not authorise rounding every 40-minute booking up to a full hour.

What about worker travel, kilometres, tolls or materials?

Provider travel labour time, non-labour travel expenses and transport of the participant are distinct potential charges. The attached price schedule does not itself establish all non-labour costs or conditions. The 2026–27 Support Catalogue includes provider travel non-labour item families, including 01_799_0120_1_1 under household tasks (notional $1 per claim unit), but the item's availability does not itself authorise every journey. Confirm the current permitted claim, agreement, reasonableness and actual costs.

Do not add a generic support worker weekend penalty automatically to this household labour item. Check the precise unit and support description.

Common questions

Is this the same as personal care provided by a disability support worker?

No. Personal care for the participant's own body and wellbeing is different from household work, even if provided inside the same home.

Can a provider charge an additional vehicle fee?

Only where the appropriate current claiming conditions permit a non-labour provider travel cost and it has been properly agreed and recorded. A notional $1 unit is not a $1-per-kilometre price.

Does the NDIS pay this expense for every household?

No. Funding depends on the participant's disability-related need, plan and current rules; the schedule sets a maximum but not automatic eligibility.
