The short answer

Use the RN item for registered nursing care within scope—for instance an appropriate disability-related catheter or continence intervention, care-plan review or skilled clinical procedure—where these services are not ordinarily funded by the health system.

What does this support actually cover?

Registered nurses perform professional nursing assessments, interventions and reviews for disability-related health requirements that NDIS is responsible for funding. Each support code distinguishes funding context and time or day.

Start with the activity or professional service the participant received, not the funding amount remaining in the plan. For each invoice, identify the specific aim of the support, where it took place, what the worker actually did and the appropriate item family. The schedule sets the maximum prices; it does not give blanket approval for every participant to purchase every listed service.

When can this item be used—and when can't it?

Situations it is intended for

Use the RN item for registered nursing care within scope—for instance an appropriate disability-related catheter or continence intervention, care-plan review or skilled clinical procedure—where these services are not ordinarily funded by the health system.

Situations that require a different approach

Do not bill RN rates when only unskilled housekeeping or community accompaniment is delivered. Do not assume any appointment after 6 pm is automatically the 'night' item; nursing evening and overnight shifts use the specific schedule definitions.

Important: a support can have a published price and still be inappropriate to charge to a participant's plan. Check the approved funding, the participant's disability-related need, their service agreement and the currently applicable claiming rules.

Who is allowed to deliver this support?

The worker must hold current Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency registration as a Registered Nurse, maintain competence and practise within the Nursing and Midwifery Board professional standards.

Worker qualifications, NDIS provider registration and permission to claim a particular item are related but different questions. Where a professional registration or a defined higher-intensity standard applies, verify the actual person delivering the work meets it. Employer classifications used to build a price limit do not replace professional practice rules.

Travel, time-of-day, cancellation and extra costs

Nursing time-of-day definitions

The September 2026 schedule defines nursing weekday daytime as support beginning at or after 6 am and finishing no later than 6 pm on one weekday. Nursing evening covers support beginning at or after noon and finishing after 6 pm that day. Nursing night includes qualifying shifts commencing at or after 6 pm and finishing before 7:30 am the following day. Check the full definitions and public holiday priority before selecting a code.

This table does not establish the right to add a therapy-style half-rate provider-travel code. Travel and non-labour costs must be separately checked against the applicable support catalogue and up-to-date claiming rules. Do not copy a transport code from another profession onto a nursing invoice.

Cancellation charges are not automatic. Check the service agreement and the currently applicable cancellation rules before claiming a cancelled session. Similarly, an extra charge cannot be inferred merely from a blank or differently worded line elsewhere in the schedule.

National rates generally apply in MM 1–5 locations; remote in MM 6; very remote in MM 7, taking account of the isolated-town modifications listed in Part 3. The service's physical location determines the applicable column. Some items may have no geographic loading.

A real-world example

An RN conducts a disability-related health procedure in a participant's home on an ordinary weekday morning, records their assessment and clinical actions and uses the correct RN weekday daytime item.

Price calculation example: the national maximum for Delivery of Health Supports by a Registered Nurse - Weekday Daytime is $128.05 per hour. For a genuinely delivered 90-minute service, the pro-rata mathematical maximum is $192.08 before any other claim limits or separate eligible charges are considered. That is an illustration of the unit calculation, not a recommendation to book or claim a particular duration.

What documentation should be available?

Record clinical indication, scope of practice, provider and participant location, intervention, duration, and the applicable nursing time-band.

Common questions

Does the highest listed price have to be charged?

No. The column shows a maximum payable for plan-managed and NDIA-managed supports, not a fixed fee. A lower rate can be agreed, and a participant's plan still needs to permit the support.

Can a different item with the same price be used instead?

No. Matching prices do not mean matching eligibility. The code must accurately identify what was delivered, the funding context, and any day, setting, profession or complexity requirements.

When should I ask for more evidence?

Ask whenever the claim includes a special qualification, higher intensity, non-standard time, remote loading, overnight support or an additional charge. An itemised invoice and clear service record make it easier to understand the basis of the charge.

Exact nursing time bands: Weekday daytime begins at or after 6:00 am and finishes by 6:00 pm. Weekday evening starts no earlier than 12:00 noon and finishes after 6:00 pm on the same day. Nursing weekday night begins at or after 6:00 pm and finishes before 7:30 am the following day (except weekends and public holidays). See the 2026–27 Pricing Schedule, pp. 95–96.
How to use this table: Yes means this code has a catalogue claim-type flag; No means it is not marked for that generic claim type; N/A means not applicable. A separately listed _PT (provider travel), _NF (non-face-to-face), _CA (cancellation), _RR (report) or _TH (telehealth) item is not cancelled by a No against a different item. Check the applicable rules, participant agreement, notice periods, travel limits and actual service before billing.
