The short answer

Use the STA labour items for eligible hands-on assistance delivered during a short-term stay. Record what care was provided, whether the worker remained awake or an eligible sleepover applied, and whether high-intensity needs genuinely met the schedule definition.

What does this support actually cover?

The short term accommodation labour items price assistance with self-care and community access during an eligible stay of up to 14 days. There are separate standard and high-intensity labour rates for the care actually delivered.

Start with the activity or professional service the participant received, not the funding amount remaining in the plan. For each invoice, identify the specific aim of the support, where it took place, what the worker actually did and the appropriate item family. The schedule sets the maximum prices; it does not give blanket approval for every participant to purchase every listed service.

When can this item be used—and when can't it?

Situations it is intended for

Use the STA labour items for eligible hands-on assistance delivered during a short-term stay. Record what care was provided, whether the worker remained awake or an eligible sleepover applied, and whether high-intensity needs genuinely met the schedule definition.

Situations that require a different approach

Do not bill 24 hours of continuous active support just because the participant sleeps at the accommodation. Do not roll meals, holiday entertainment or unapproved living costs into the labour line item; accommodation itself has separate codes. High-intensity rates require the relevant support complexity.

Important: a support can have a published price and still be inappropriate to charge to a participant's plan. Check the approved funding, the participant's disability-related need, their service agreement and the currently applicable claiming rules.

Who is allowed to deliver this support?

Staff must be capable of the participant's support needs; high-intensity duties require the corresponding skill set and safe clinical or behavioural supervision where applicable.

Worker qualifications, NDIS provider registration and permission to claim a particular item are related but different questions. Where a professional registration or a defined higher-intensity standard applies, verify the actual person delivering the work meets it. Employer classifications used to build a price limit do not replace professional practice rules.

Travel, time-of-day, cancellation and extra costs

Daytime, evening and overnight rates

For supports other than nursing, the schedule generally defines weekday daytime as a shift from at least 6 am until no later than 8 pm; evening starts at or after 8 pm and ends by midnight. Weekday night covers certain shifts crossing midnight or starting before 6 am. A sleepover is a separate arrangement requiring a continuous eight-hour-or-longer period during which the worker is allowed to sleep when not supporting the participant. Under Part 1, the higher rate applies to a single worker's support crossing price bands.

Travel time, vehicle running costs, parking and tolls are separate concepts. Not every item has a matching separate provider-travel code in this schedule. A provider should discuss potentially claimable travel in advance and check the current support catalogue, claim type and relevant NDIA guidance before invoicing it. The September 2026 schedule does not itself specify all non-labour travel codes and conditions.

Cancellation charges are not automatic. Check the service agreement and the currently applicable cancellation rules before claiming a cancelled session. Similarly, an extra charge cannot be inferred merely from a blank or differently worded line elsewhere in the schedule.

National rates generally apply in MM 1–5 locations; remote in MM 6; very remote in MM 7, taking account of the isolated-town modifications listed in Part 3. The service's physical location determines the applicable column. Some items may have no geographic loading.

A real-world example

During an eligible short-term stay, the worker provides assistance with morning personal care and support to participate in a planned community activity. The direct labour should be itemised against the applicable STA hourly item, distinct from accommodation.

Price calculation example: the national maximum for Short Term Accommodation - Standard - Weekday Daytime is $73.58 per hour. For a genuinely delivered 90-minute service, the pro-rata mathematical maximum is $110.37 before any other claim limits or separate eligible charges are considered. That is an illustration of the unit calculation, not a recommendation to book or claim a particular duration.

What documentation should be available?

Document the purpose and length of stay, active support hours, staffing ratios, overnight arrangement and funding agreement.

Common questions

Does the highest listed price have to be charged?

No. The column shows a maximum payable for plan-managed and NDIA-managed supports, not a fixed fee. A lower rate can be agreed, and a participant's plan still needs to permit the support.

Can a different item with the same price be used instead?

No. Matching prices do not mean matching eligibility. The code must accurately identify what was delivered, the funding context, and any day, setting, profession or complexity requirements.

When should I ask for more evidence?

Ask whenever the claim includes a special qualification, higher intensity, non-standard time, remote loading, overnight support or an additional charge. An itemised invoice and clear service record make it easier to understand the basis of the charge.

Claim types for these 13 item codes

Checked against the official NDIS Support Catalogue 2026–27. These are item-specific catalogue flags, not a claim approval. National, remote and very remote price limits and billing units are listed above.

Exact shift times for support workers: Weekday daytime applies when a support starts at or after 6:00 am and finishes by 8:00 pm on one weekday. Weekday evening starts at or after 8:00 pm and finishes at or before midnight on one weekday. Weekday night applies to a support crossing midnight into the next weekday, or starting before 6:00 am and ending that weekday. Public holidays, weekends and night-time sleepovers have separate definitions (Pricing Schedule 2026–27, pp. 95–96).
Reading the flags: “Yes” means the catalogue marks that code as eligible for that claim type; “No” means it is not marked eligible; “N/A” means not applicable. Important: a dedicated _PT, _NF, _CA, _RR or _TH item is different from the generic Yes/No flag shown against another code. Travel minutes, participant agreement, non-labour expenses and cancellation notice must still meet the applicable current rules.
