The short answer

Use the self-care family for hands-on personal care such as washing, dressing and eating assistance; the community access family for disability-related help to attend and participate in activities; the group family where support is delivered to a group; and the SIL families where the approved living arrangement and support purpose match. Level 1 is the standard stream, not the appropriate choice if genuinely high-intensity health skills or intensive complex behaviour intervention are required.

What does this support actually cover?

These Level 1 disability support worker items fund practical assistance with self-care, supported independent living, social and community participation, employment participation and related individual skill development. Although some hourly limits match, the item families describe different work and must not be swapped simply to fit a budget.

Start with the activity or professional service the participant received, not the funding amount remaining in the plan. For each invoice, identify the specific aim of the support, where it took place, what the worker actually did and the appropriate item family. The schedule sets the maximum prices; it does not give blanket approval for every participant to purchase every listed service.

When can this item be used—and when can't it?

Situations it is intended for

Use the self-care family for hands-on personal care such as washing, dressing and eating assistance; the community access family for disability-related help to attend and participate in activities; the group family where support is delivered to a group; and the SIL families where the approved living arrangement and support purpose match. Level 1 is the standard stream, not the appropriate choice if genuinely high-intensity health skills or intensive complex behaviour intervention are required.

Situations that require a different approach

Do not bill personal care for routine house cleaning or a therapy assessment. Do not treat centre capital costs, a sleepover, an establishment fee or support in employment as interchangeable with an ordinary hourly shift. Do not charge each group member the entire group worker rate.

Important: a support can have a published price and still be inappropriate to charge to a participant's plan. Check the approved funding, the participant's disability-related need, their service agreement and the currently applicable claiming rules.
Mandatory SIL provider registration (important 2026 update): The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission says providers delivering assistance with supported independent living, as defined in the 2026 registration rules, must be registered from 1 July 2026, subject to applicable transitional arrangements. This is separate from the individual worker's skills or the SCHADS pricing model. Not every service supplied inside a person's home constitutes SIL; check the actual arrangement against the Commission's definition. See official mandatory registration guidance and our qualifications guide.

Who is allowed to deliver this support?

The schedule prices Level 1 using the costs of a SCHADS Award Schedule B level 2.3 worker. That is a pricing benchmark, not a statement that every worker must hold one named certificate. Providers still need suitable training, competence, safeguarding, supervision and compliance with any registration or high-intensity obligations relevant to the actual task.

Worker qualifications, NDIS provider registration and permission to claim a particular item are related but different questions. Where a professional registration or a defined higher-intensity standard applies, verify the actual person delivering the work meets it. Employer classifications used to build a price limit do not replace professional practice rules.

All 46 support codes and 2026–27 maximum prices

The tables below reproduce the codes, billing units and national, remote and very remote maximum amounts for this pricing-table group from the supplied official schedule. Individual support item names distinguish service setting, worker level, activity and/or time of delivery. On narrow screens, each pricing row is displayed as a labelled card.

Personal care and self-care

What it is: Hands-on or prompting assistance with essential personal tasks such as showering, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers and everyday eating routines when disability-related limitations make these difficult or unsafe.

Use when: The worker is actually helping with the participant's own personal care at the agreed level. Select the weekday, evening, night, weekend or sleepover item that matches the entire qualifying shift.

Do not use when: The task is solely routine household cleaning, gardening, clinical nursing, a therapy assessment or a social excursion. High-intensity care has separate conditions.

Example: A worker assists with showering and dressing for 75 minutes on a Tuesday morning; use the relevant standard self-care daytime item, billed for the actual eligible duration.

Supported Independent Living

What it is: Assistance with everyday living routines in an appropriately funded supported living arrangement. The schedule separately lists assistance-in-SIL and SIL-labelled item families, each with its own full code even where prices match.

Use when: A worker provides planned disability support in the supported living setting, with the correct staffing ratio, funded arrangement, tasks and worker classification. A shared worker requires accurate cost allocation.

Do not use when: The cost is rent, groceries, SDA dwelling accommodation, an unrelated property fee or non-supported living care. Do not claim both SIL code families for the same worker hour.

Provider rule: SIL provider registration requirements introduced in 2026 must be considered, including current transitional arrangements.

Establishment fees

What it is: A specifically priced one-off, per-instance establishment item for eligible commencement of personal care or participation services.

Use when: The current item-specific eligibility requirements and service agreement permit it and the provider can document the qualifying initial arrangements.

Do not use when: Automatically onboarding any new participant, scheduling an ordinary roster, delivering a single unrelated visit or repeatedly invoicing the same initial set-up. The schedule lists a maximum but not every detailed qualifying condition.

Community access

What it is: Disability-related worker assistance to access social, cultural, recreational and community activities, and to participate meaningfully rather than merely being physically transported.

Use when: A worker supports a participant to attend an eligible event, visit the library, connect with community, practise participation skills or engage in a funded activity. Record the participant's specific support needs and activities.

Do not use when: The charge is simply the participant's movie ticket, a personal holiday, routine personal care or unrelated vehicle running costs. Activity-based transport is a separate possible cost with separate rules.

Example: One-to-one support to use a community centre safely and participate in a planned group activity.

Group supports

What it is: Assistance provided at the same time to a group of participants rather than exclusively to one person.

Use when: Workers deliver an eligible organised group support; document the number of participants, staffing and duration. Part 1 of the schedule requires the applicable group maximum to be divided by group size.

Do not use when: Each participant is charged the full individual worker rate for the same shared hour, or a genuine one-to-one service is labelled group support solely because other people happen to be at the venue.

Example: One worker supports two participants for a standard daytime group session. A $73.58 group worker-hour maximum would be divided by two, $36.79 per participant for that hour if all conditions apply.

Employment participation

What it is: Participant-specific disability support that helps someone undertake or sustain suitable paid employment, develop workplace skills and participate in work duties.

Use when: A participant needs an agreed disability-related worker support during employment or structured work participation. The code must reflect the precise job-related support and funding category.

Do not use when: Paying the participant's wages, covering the employer's ordinary supervision or replacing a normal employee's duty. General job applications, clinical employment therapy and personal care may have different items.

Example: A worker assists a participant to follow their tailored work routine and access appropriate communication support during a shift.

Other Level 1 capacity-building items

What they are: Decision-making, daily planning, budgeting and practical training such as learning to use public transport. These build independence and are different from simply doing an activity for a participant.

Use when: The session has a clear learning goal, activities and evidence of progress, such as navigating a bus route or planning essential purchases.

Do not use when: The worker simply drives the participant to a destination with no structured learning, or completes unrelated provider administration.

Travel, time-of-day, cancellation and extra costs

Daytime, evening and overnight rates

For supports other than nursing, the schedule generally defines weekday daytime as a shift from at least 6 am until no later than 8 pm; evening starts at or after 8 pm and ends by midnight. Weekday night covers certain shifts crossing midnight or starting before 6 am. A sleepover is a separate arrangement requiring a continuous eight-hour-or-longer period during which the worker is allowed to sleep when not supporting the participant. Under Part 1, the higher rate applies to a single worker's support crossing price bands.

Travel time, vehicle running costs, parking and tolls are separate concepts. Not every item has a matching separate provider-travel code in this schedule. A provider should discuss potentially claimable travel in advance and check the current support catalogue, claim type and relevant NDIA guidance before invoicing it. The September 2026 schedule does not itself specify all non-labour travel codes and conditions.

Cancellation charges are not automatic. Check the service agreement and the currently applicable cancellation rules before claiming a cancelled session. Similarly, an extra charge cannot be inferred merely from a blank or differently worded line elsewhere in the schedule.

National rates generally apply in MM 1–5 locations; remote in MM 6; very remote in MM 7, taking account of the isolated-town modifications listed in Part 3. The service's physical location determines the applicable column. Some items may have no geographic loading.

A real-world example

A support worker assists a participant with showering and dressing for 90 minutes on an ordinary Tuesday morning. The standard self-care weekday daytime item is the relevant family, provided that support is appropriate to the plan. If the same worker instead accompanies the participant to a community art group, check the community access item rather than reusing the personal-care code.

Price calculation example: the national maximum for Assistance With Self-Care Activities - Standard - Weekday Night is $82.57 per hour. For a genuinely delivered 90-minute service, the pro-rata mathematical maximum is $123.85 before any other claim limits or separate eligible charges are considered. That is an illustration of the unit calculation, not a recommendation to book or claim a particular duration.

What documentation should be available?

Record the location, the actual tasks, the agreed times, whether the participant was supported individually or within a group, and whether the shift involved SIL. For sleepovers document the uninterrupted overnight period and periods of active assistance.

Common questions

Does the highest listed price have to be charged?

No. The column shows a maximum payable for plan-managed and NDIA-managed supports, not a fixed fee. A lower rate can be agreed, and a participant's plan still needs to permit the support.

Can a different item with the same price be used instead?

No. Matching prices do not mean matching eligibility. The code must accurately identify what was delivered, the funding context, and any day, setting, profession or complexity requirements.

When should I ask for more evidence?

Ask whenever the claim includes a special qualification, higher intensity, non-standard time, remote loading, overnight support or an additional charge. An itemised invoice and clear service record make it easier to understand the basis of the charge.

Claim types for these 46 item codes

Checked against the official NDIS Support Catalogue 2026–27. These are item-specific catalogue flags, not a claim approval. National, remote and very remote price limits and billing units are listed above.

Exact shift times for support workers: Weekday daytime applies when a support starts at or after 6:00 am and finishes by 8:00 pm on one weekday. Weekday evening starts at or after 8:00 pm and finishes at or before midnight on one weekday. Weekday night applies to a support crossing midnight into the next weekday, or starting before 6:00 am and ending that weekday. Public holidays, weekends and night-time sleepovers have separate definitions (Pricing Schedule 2026–27, pp. 95–96).
Reading the flags: “Yes” means the catalogue marks that code as eligible for that claim type; “No” means it is not marked eligible; “N/A” means not applicable. Important: a dedicated _PT, _NF, _CA, _RR or _TH item is different from the generic Yes/No flag shown against another code. Travel minutes, participant agreement, non-labour expenses and cancellation notice must still meet the applicable current rules.
